#1 — WEEKEND TIER
Filipino AI Calorie Tracker
STRONG DEMAND HEALTH & FITNESS PH
Gap Signal
Category void + cross-market arbitrage. Philippines has zero local health/fitness apps in the top 15 (100% Western incumbents). Thailand’s NubCal (35K reviews in 11 months, launched Mar 2025) and Kalguroo (14.7K in 7 months) prove the localized AI calorie model works in SEA. Philippines has zero equivalent. Searching “calorie tracker Filipino” on the App Store returns literally one brand-new app with 0 reviews.
Demand Evidence
  • Reddit (explicit, recurring): “Bakit walang version ng MyFitnessPal na naka-focus sa Filipino food?” (r/inthephilippines, Jul 2025) — literally “Why is there no MFP for Filipino food?” Users cite sinigang, adobo, kare-kare as untraceable. This exact complaint has appeared since 2015.1
  • Reddit (engagement): “High volume low calorie food” (r/filipinofood, score: 92, 43 comments) — Filipinos actively seeking local low-cal meals.2
  • Google Trends: “calorie tracker” in PH rising — peak 100 in Jul 2025, breakout queries: “best calorie tracker app reddit,” “best free calorie tracking app.” “Fitness app” peaked at 100 in Jan 2026.3
  • App Store suggest: “calorie Filipino” returns nothing. “Filipino food” returns only recipe apps, not trackers. “Fitness Philippines” returns nothing. Wide open keyword space.
Current Best Competitor
MyFitnessPal (30.8K reviews in PH, 4.84☆). Key weakness: no Filipino food database. Users must manually enter every local dish. A “Health Coin” Filipino calorie app launched but got 0 Reddit upvotes and 3 comments — execution failure, not demand failure.
Build Estimate
WEEKEND (1–3 days) — SwiftUI + CoreML/Vision photo recognition + curated Filipino food database (JSON, on-device). No backend needed for v1. Camera-based food logging with pre-populated local dishes. NubCal-style UX: snap photo → identify → log calories.
Monetization
Freemium: free manual logging + limited photo scans. Paid tier (PHP 149–249/mo, ~$2.70–$4.50) for unlimited AI scans + meal plans. NubCal charges ∼$3/mo in Thailand — comparable.
Prerequisites
Filipino food database (200–300 common dishes with macros). Can be compiled from FNRI (Philippines Food & Nutrition Research Institute) public data + community-sourced. This is the moat — not the tech.
Eric’s Edge
Pure execution play. SwiftUI + on-device AI is within capability. Raymond Sze has PH market familiarity (previously sold to HK Filipinos). English-speaking market reduces localization burden. The 杭州 solo-dev pattern (ship fast, iterate on data) applies cleanly here.
Why Now
NubCal proved the model in TH (35K reviews in 11 months). PH “fitness app” searches peaked Jan 2026. AI calorie wave is 2024–2025 — the window to be first-in-market for PH is open but closing.
#2 — WEEKEND TIER
Taiwan Local Ad Blocker
STRONG DEMAND UTILITIES TW
Gap Signal
Cross-market arbitrage. Japan’s 280blocker (28.7K reviews, ¥800 / ~$5.50) has been the #1 top paid iPhone app in Japan for 3 consecutive years (2023–2025). It works because it maintains Japan-specific ad network filter lists. Taiwan has zero equivalent — no TW-first ad blocker tuned to local ad networks (LINE ads, Yahoo TW, local tracking scripts). AdGuard and 1Blocker serve TW in English but miss local ad ecosystems.
Demand Evidence
  • Google Trends: “ad blocker” in Taiwan is at 100/100 this week (Feb 15, 2026) — literal all-time peak. All 6 major cities reporting demand. Breakout queries: “youtube ad blocker” (100), “twitch ad blocker” (+250%), “ublock origin” (+70%).4
  • Reddit (visceral): “What are you doing for blocking ads on iOS in 2025?” (r/ios, 126 upvotes, 121 comments). “This is the one thing that keeps me from using iPhone as daily driver.” New entrants still launching (Feb 12, 2026).5
  • App Store suggest: Both “ad blocker” and “block ads” return full 10 suggestions each — Apple’s autocomplete saturated with demand. However, “廣告阻擋” (Traditional Chinese) returns nothing — the localized term is untapped in the App Store index.
Current Best Competitor
AdGuard (13.4K reviews in TW, 4.32☆) — global tool, not TW-specific. 280blocker only serves Japan. Brave Browser (310K reviews) handles some blocking but is a full browser replacement, not a lightweight Safari extension.
Build Estimate
WEEKEND (1–3 days) — Safari Content Blocker API + JSON filter lists. No backend. The app is a filter list compiler and manager. The ongoing work is maintaining and updating the TW-specific filter lists (LINE ads, Yahoo TW trackers, PTT ad injectors, local news site paywalls).
Monetization
One-time paid app: TWD 90–170 (~$2.80–$5.30). 280blocker charges ¥800 ($5.50) and has been #1 paid for 3 years. TW price sensitivity is slightly higher than JP — start at TWD 90, raise after reviews.
Prerequisites
Taiwan ad network filter list. Requires research into local ad domains: LINE ad serving, Yahoo TW, local news ad networks, PTT sidebar ads, and common TW tracking scripts. Can be bootstrapped by analyzing network traffic on top TW websites. Ongoing maintenance is the moat.
Eric’s Edge
Douglas has Taipei connections. Leo Wong has App Store experience (200K+ download app). Technical build is simple (Safari Content Blocker API is well-documented). The real edge: this is a paid app with immediate revenue — no freemium funnel needed. If it works, Day 1 users pay.
Why Now
“ad blocker” in TW at literal all-time peak this week. YouTube’s escalating anti-adblock measures (2025) are driving Safari users to seek content blockers. The “廣告阻擋” App Store keyword is completely empty — first mover takes the category name in Traditional Chinese.
#3 — WEEKEND TIER
Tagalog Catholic Prayer App
STRONG DEMAND LIFESTYLE PH
Gap Signal
Category void + language gap. Philippines is ~86% Catholic (87M people). Not a single Filipino-made prayer app exists. The rosary app category has exceptional ratings (4.55–5.0 across all apps) — users love this content type. A Polish individual developer (Tomasz Powalka) owns the #1 and #6 rosary apps in PH. Hallow (US, 13.3K reviews) dominates but is English-first. Zero Tagalog results in App Store suggest for “rosary,” “Catholic prayer,” or “novena.”
Demand Evidence
  • Google Trends: “rosary app” in PH hit all-time peak this week (Feb 8–14, 2026). “Prayer app” shows strong spread across 9 Philippine regions, weighted toward Visayas and Mindanao — the devout heartlands where Tagalog resonance is highest.6
  • Google Trends: “Hallow app” is declining in PH (from 100 to 7). The incumbent peaked but didn’t stick. Brand awareness rose (Gwen Stefani Super Bowl ad controversy) but conversion dropped.7
  • Reddit: r/Catholicism actively supports niche prayer apps (Credo Latin prayer app: 80 upvotes, 58 comments). Users question Hallow’s orthodoxy (“Is the Hallow App Really Catholic?” — 22 comments). Trust gap in the incumbent.8
  • App Store: Spanish-language novena apps appear in suggest (proving non-English Catholic markets exist), but zero Tagalog entries. “Catholic prayers novena” appears as a suggestion — novenas are deeply embedded in Filipino Catholicism.
Current Best Competitor
Hallow (13.3K reviews, 4.88☆). US-built, English-first, subscription-heavy ($8.99/mo). Provincial Filipino users (where Catholicism runs deepest) would strongly prefer Tagalog. The Polish dev Tomasz Powalka has #1 and #6 rosary apps with 2.7K reviews combined — a solo dev proving the playbook.
Build Estimate
WEEKEND (1–3 days) — SwiftUI + local audio files (Tagalog rosary recordings). Prayer text content (public domain). Offline-first, no backend. Calendar integration for novena tracking. Daily devotional notifications.
Monetization
One-time paid (PHP 79–149, ~$1.40–$2.70) or freemium with premium content (guided meditations, novena collections, saints of the day). Hallow charges $8.99/mo — a one-time purchase at 1/50th the price is compelling in a price-sensitive market.
Prerequisites
Tagalog prayer content + audio recordings. Rosary mysteries, novena texts, and common prayers are public domain. Audio can be recorded with any Tagalog speaker or synthesized. The content is the moat — anyone can build the UI, but curated Tagalog audio with proper pronunciation matters to devout users.
Eric’s Edge
No Catholic network contacts. No Tagalog fluency. This is a pure execution play — the tech is trivial, the content is public domain, and the gap is wide. Could recruit a Tagalog-speaking collaborator through Raymond’s PH connections. The solo-dev playbook (Tomasz Powalka proving it with 2 rosary apps) is the template.
Why Now
“Rosary app” at all-time peak in PH this week. Lent begins Mar 5, 2026 — the highest-demand period for Catholic prayer content. Shipping before Lent would catch the seasonal surge.

III. Market Notes

Per-Country Observations

Taiwan (TW)
  • Health charts flooded with CN/HK/SG shell company “health scan” apps — fake reviews, typo websites (heathcop.live), subscription traps. Quality health apps (智抗糖 14.5K reviews, Plant Nanny 23.8K) succeed when they’re genuine.
  • Food charts dominated by chain loyalty apps (McDonald’s, Starbucks, KFC). 愛食記 (40.5K reviews) is the market leader for food discovery but uses a blog-aggregation model — no community-driven UGC like Tabelog. Tabelog just entered (Nov 2025) but only covers Japan restaurants.
  • AI assistant space: ChatGPT dominates (480K reviews). Zero TW-native AI assistant. DeepSeek has 3.31☆ in TW (worst-rated AI app) — TW users hostile to CN AI. Dozens of GPT wrappers survive, validating demand for Chinese-language AI.
  • Ad blocker demand at all-time peak (see Opportunity #2). YouTube anti-adblock escalation is the proximate trigger.
China (CN)
  • Productivity charts are an AI battleground: Doubao (ByteDance), Qwen (Alibaba), Yuanbao (Tencent), Wenxin (Baidu), DeepSeek. Not a viable market for outside developers — platform lock-in is total.
  • 28 apps appear in both TW and CN charts — the highest cross-market overlap. Xiaomi Fitness, Mijia, Alipay, CamScanner bridge both markets.
  • Lifestyle is super-app territory (Alipay, Meituan, Dazhong Dianping). No space for independent lifestyle apps.
Japan (JP)
  • 280blocker (#1 paid 3 consecutive years, ¥800, 28.7K reviews) proves the localized utility model. Run by TSE-listed Tobila Systems. The playbook: “strongest against Japanese ad networks.”
  • MoneyWalk (51.4K reviews) proves steps-to-rewards at scale. Korean origin, JP-localized. Has not cracked SEA (only 24 reviews in TH).
  • Food charts are extremely localized (Tabelog, Hot Pepper, chain-specific apps). No foreign food discovery app penetrates JP.
  • AI adoption is high: 6 of 15 top free Productivity apps are AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Claude, Genspark, NotebookLM).
Malaysia (MY)
  • Free charts dominated by telecom and government apps (CelcomDigi, MyJPJ, myTNB, Unifi). Government e-services are a major app category.
  • Coffee chain apps have remarkable density: 7 of 15 top free F&D apps are coffee/tea chains (ZUS Coffee 321K reviews, CHAGEE, Luckin, Kenangan, Coffee Bean, Gigi, Tealive).
  • Halal food discovery is massively underserved (max 274 reviews for any halal scanner, only 2 MY-developed apps). But scanner market is getting crowded globally — commoditizing.
  • Paid charts nearly empty of local presence across all categories. Western apps dominate paid purchases.
Thailand (TH)
  • AI calorie tracking has exploded: NubCal (34.9K reviews in 11 months, Thai dev), Kalguroo (14.7K in 7 months). These local apps are crushing Western incumbents. This is the proof case that localized calorie tracking works in SEA.
  • Astrology is a genuine cultural market: ดวง Live (15.6K reviews, live fortune telling), a ดวง (7.3K, PGC model), Kooup (21.8K, astrology-based dating). Fugang Co. owns 3 apps + the dating app — full ecosystem play. Listed company OOKBEE U backs the space, validating market size.
  • These Thai astrology apps are fascinating but not exportable without deep cultural competence. The live fortune-telling format is unique globally.
Philippines (PH)
  • Zero local health/fitness apps. Only PH health app found: Traqs Philippines (15 reviews, 3.6☆). The entire fitness category is Western-imported. CalDef (Filipino dev, AI calorie) just launched Feb 9, 2026 with 0 reviews — someone else sees the gap.
  • Religious/spiritual content is culturally enormous. Bible (YouVersion) has 348K reviews. Hallow has 13.3K. All Western-built, English-first. No Filipino developer has built for the 87M Catholic market.
  • Search results heavily polluted with shopping/retail (Shopee 748K reviews, Watsons, iHerb). Food & Drink paid chart has zero local apps.
Vietnam (VN)
  • Government health app (Sờ sức khỏe điện tử) has 31.5K reviews at 2.4☆ — users hate it but are forced to use it. The pain signal is massive.
  • LivWell attempted steps-to-rewards in VN and failed (2.4☆, 1.7K reviews). The concept has demand but execution was terrible.
  • Food is the one strong local ecosystem: Cooky (21.2K reviews), ShopeeFood (781K), and multiple Vietnamese recipe apps. Not a gap worth pursuing.
  • Utility results dominated by Chinese widget/customization apps. Only VN-native utilities: Laban Key (VNG keyboard) and bTaskee (home services).

Deprioritized Opportunities

OpportunityTierReason Deprioritized
Taiwan Food DiscoveryProjectNeeds restaurant database + UGC community. 愛食記 entrenched at 40K reviews. Can’t ship with zero content.
Malaysia Halal Food ScannerSprintHalal certification data fragmented (JAKIM API needed). Scanner market commoditizing fast (3–4 new competitors in 2025–2026). MY-specific demand signal weaker than global halal.
VN Health App ReplacementProjectZero VN contacts, zero Vietnamese language capability, regulatory risk (government health data), competitor already testing (EatSafe Jan 2026).
SEA Steps-to-RewardsProjectNeeds local merchant partnerships for reward redemption. LivWell already failed in VN. Google Trends show zero search data in TH/TW. Demand is thin and beermoney-adjacent.
Thai Astrology ExportSprintZero Thai contacts, cultural sensitivity risk, Fugang Co. already dominates with 3 apps + dating. Export to non-Thai markets unproven.

Top Picks

#1 Filipino AI Calorie Tracker. This is the strongest signal in the entire scan. A 10-year-old unsolved pain point (Filipinos can’t track local food calories), zero competition at the keyword intersection, rising Google Trends, a proven model in neighboring Thailand (NubCal: 35K reviews in 11 months), and a Weekend-tier build. The moat is the Filipino food database (200–300 common dishes with macros from FNRI data). Ship fast, iterate on data accuracy. English-speaking market means no localization wall for v1.

#2 Taiwan Local Ad Blocker. Proven paid-app model in Japan (280blocker: #1 paid for 3 years). “Ad blocker” at all-time peak in Taiwan this week. Safari Content Blocker API makes the build trivial — the ongoing work is maintaining TW-specific filter lists. Immediate revenue (paid app, no freemium funnel needed). The “廣告阻擋” App Store keyword is completely empty — first mover takes the category name in Traditional Chinese.

#3 Tagalog Catholic Prayer App. 87M Catholics in the Philippines, zero Tagalog-first prayer apps. “Rosary app” at all-time peak in PH this week. Lent starts March 5 — the seasonal window for maximum impact. A Polish solo dev (Tomasz Powalka) proving the playbook with 2 rosary apps and 2.7K reviews. Content is public domain. Ship before Lent.

Honest caveat: None of these are ideas where Eric has deep domain expertise. These are pure execution plays in underserved markets. The 杭州 reference (solo dev shipping 120 apps) works because of years of software architecture + IoT background + rapid iteration muscle. Eric’s first app will be slower. Pick ONE, ship it, learn the App Store dynamics, then accelerate. The Filipino calorie tracker is the strongest because the moat (food database) is defensible and the demand is most explicit.
